A Way Ahead in Wisconsin Using the Coordination Process

As of 29 Oct 07

The Second "Smart Growth"/Comprehensive Planning Radio Series introduced better alternatives to "Smart Growth"/Comprehensive Planning (SG/CP) for communities, businesses, and industry in Wisconsin. The first alternative was called L.E.A.R.N., which primarily uses a Cooperation Process between communities / businesses and the state and/or federal governments (Dr. Mike Coffman & Associate Professor John Williams (Show 6)). During the broadcasting of show 6 we literally discovered that there was also another alternative available. In order to find out more about this second alternative remaining shows in the radio series were adjusted to give us the opportunity to hear about it. We found out that this second alternative used a different approach via a Coordination Process (Dr. Michael Coffman & Attorney Fred Grant (Show 6-1)).

Due to circumstances that could not be helped, some confusion was created by the near simultaneous introduction of these two processes. But as a result of sorting them out it was determined that the Coordination Process would be the more effective of the two against SG/CP. For future reference, we therefore anticipate that the Coordination Process will be the primary alternative used in Wisconsin against SG/CP. If L.E.A.R.N. is referred to it will be in reference to the cooperation process. Dr. Coffman addressed the differences in these two processes in the last show (Show 10) in the series, which as of this posting has yet to be turned into a transcript. However, to read more about it now Dr. Coffman has provided us with a separate written assessment (click here).

Opportunities in Learning About the Coordination Process for Wisconsin

Directly following the radio series Wisconsin county, township, city, and business officials began asking about training in order to get started in using this process. Stewards of the Range (www.stewards.us) provides training in the Coordination Process, but they are not able to come to Wisconsin until early 2008 due to prior commitments in training other states. Margaret Byfield, Executive Director of Stewards of the Range, oversees this training and has expressed their intent to provide us with that training first opportunity next year, so more to follow. We look forward to seeing them and you in 2008!

For the sake of our future, we owe it to our communities, our industries, and our state
to take advantage of the Coordination Process.
